If Ben’s writings are famous, a huge part of his work is less well known. In the 60’s, his work flirted with performance art, to question once again the concepts of language and communication. It was called Ben’s ‘Théâtre Total’. On the occasion of the Ben retrospective at the Contemporary Museum of Lyon, students from the ENSATT have taken on the performative aspect of his work and created, under his guidance, a few impromptu street performances.

Background

Ben is one of the major figures of 20th century art, known for his actions and paintings. His work, both a reflection on art at its most fundamental level and including everyday life at its most detailed, manages to turn life into art. His work therefore includes universes as remote from the art field as ethnicity, ego and truth. Ben is incredibly popular thanks to his ‘writings’, which mix both relevance and irrelevance.
