24.25 april 09

Friday 11pm, Saturday 10.30pm.

Drums, vocals, guembri...: two concerts kick off the evening sessions beautifully and energetically with the Marrakech Gnawas.

Gnawas originate from Western Africa. They were taken to Morocco as slaves thousands of years ago.

They slowly assimilated to the local population and created a fraternity based on an ancestral cult with both African and Arabic/Berber influences. Gnawa music is at the root of a trance ritual called derdeba which takes place at night (lila).

Background : Dhibi Moulay Tayeb, a young virtuoso, represents the new generation of great Gnawa masters. He is an excellent singer and guembri player, but also a crotales player and a dancer/acrobat. He has toured on many occasions, including in France with the band High Tone.

Duration : 1hr

Price : Free
