Congo my body

Compagnie KAZYADANCE / Djodjo Kazadi

Workshop : 17 March at 7.30pm
How can I talk about the Congo?
The Congo, my country, my body, a body fragmented, broken, twisted, injured - the Congo is us. A forgotten body that carries us like a drifting mother. We are at the source of its construction, and masters of its destruction. Unravelling our past and turning back the clock, we force ourselves to remember a single moment, a single period. We were ten years old. Who were we? Where were we at that point? What was our life like? This is the childhood of three young children in the Congo in the early 90’s.

The perceived body, the screaming body, the body of a dancer... No, that of a child soldier! The perceived body, the singing body, the body of a puppet... No, that of a child soldier! The truth that can be danced, the dance of tears, of fear, of hate, the dance of dignity. The body beating time, appropriating space, the space of freedom, the space of old traumas. A space to tell stories in... In his work, Djodjo Kazadi appropriates the space to weave it with time. The monotonous and repetitive space is where the movement is born.

Djodjo Kazadi

Residence dates: From 28 February to 19 March 2011

Following formal theatre training in Kinshasa, Djodjo Kazadi performed for five years for theatre company Les Béjart. During a course headed by Faustin Linyekula, Kazadi discovered dancing. He also trained through courses and workshops offered by Céline Bacqué, Toufik Oudhriri Idrissi, Hanna Hedman, Sylvain Prunenec, and more recently Meg Stuart. As a performer for Faustin Linyekula and Studios Kabako from 2001 to 2007, he was involved in every single production created by this company. In December 2002, he was invited to participate to an artist residency in Douala as part of the project entitled "Scénographies urbaines". In 2003, Djodjo organised the first hip-hop dance competition in Kinshasa, which led him in 2004 to create a first production for six hip-hop dancers called Mudjansa. In 2005, he and Papy Ebotani founded duo Ya Biso, which performed in Africa (Kinshasa, Bamako) and Europe (Berlin, Paris, Bern and Mons). In 2007, Castrations, his third production, was performed throughout Europe (Mons, Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Paris, and Salzburg) and Africa (Kinshasa, Brazzaville).
