For this creation, Clédat & Petitpierre were hosted in residence several times at Les SUBS in 2019 and 2020.
After breathing life into hirsute yetis and other life-size Swiss figurines, the artists Clédat & Petitpierre take visual inspiration for their new creation from the phantasmagorical creatures that haunt medieval imagination. What was great in the Middle Ages is that we didn’t bother with today’s distinctions between the real world and the imagined world. Everything was mixed together in a world composed of “physical reality” and “imaginary reality.”
Clédat & Petitpierre explore imaginary reality by putting marvelously hybrid creatures on stage: the Panotii has huge ears to curl up in, the Sciapode a single foot it uses as a parasol, and the Blemmye’s face is on its chest. Three virtuoso dancers and circus artists embody these fabulous characters in an absolutely fascinating constellation of lights and plants.
A fusional duo, the artists Yvan Clédat and Coco Petitpierre met in 1986. Sculptors, performance artists, and directors, they test exhibit space and stage space through a shape-shifting, amused work in which the artists’ bodies are regularly in play. Their works are presented in arts centers, museums, festivals, and theaters in France and fifteen other countries. In addition to their own joint artistic work, they also work together or separately with a number of other directors and choreographers.
