Retour sur la performance de samedi 29 mars 2014 aux Subsistances…

For the ten year birthday at Les-Subsistances in Lyon I was invited to do CHANDELIER again, after at least fifty times in twenty countries – but what a shock for me and for the audience. As it frenchly says below, ‘unique and unforgettable’. I entered the verriere on the cobblestones and fell. And stood up and fell. And fell again. With bleeding knees, I asked for help from the audience. Two people supported me as I walked to the stage. I climbed up the steps onto the stage and fell, breaking the chandelier. Crystals on the floor like shed tears, pieces of me. I asked the audience for help again saying (in my ghastly french), ‘this is not part of the performance, it is part of my life’. People helped me to the winch. I was suspended into the heights of darkness for the jewish prayer for light. I descended, reluctantly let go of the winch, and collapsed once more. My life is so shattered at the moment I have no equilibrium. I crawled in the wounded chandelier to where the wreckage of broken crystals were on the stage and sat, and together with the audience, watched the video CHANDELIER. It was as ever powerful, even more so for me as I sat in the debris of my life and art. Then, impromptu, involuntarily in tears and snot but with as much dignity as I could, I explained to the audience that something in me could not do it anymore. That something in me had broken, had died, was refusing, that I had reached my limit. I was shamelessly honest. The audience was sublime. They gave me a standing ovation as I was (literally) helped out. It was totally unplanned and practically unbearable, really performance art, not theatre at all. It was awkward. It was sad. It was a failure. It was beautiful. It was what it was … and it was what it wasn’t.

Cet artiste se consacre depuis plus de dix ans à la création d’œuvres plastiques tout en développant des performances artistiques qui empruntent à la fois au film, à la danse et au travestissement. Il investit, de façon inopinée, la rue et les lieux les plus insolites : stations de taxis, champs de courses, centres commerciaux…

Chandelier est une performance vidéo réalisée pour la première fois dans un bidonville de Johannesburg. Au milieu de personnes qui assistent à sa destruction par les employés municipaux, Steven Cohen déambule haut perché, transformé en chandelier vivant comme suspendu dans les airs.

Le travail de Chandelier révèle à travers l’art de la performance, la danse et le film, les contradictions entre l’Europe et l’Afrique, les blancs et les noirs, les riches et les pauvres, l’ombre et la lumière, le privé et le public, les forts et les opprimés, la sécurité et le danger.

Le spectacle Chandelier a été présenté lors du Week_End de réouverture des Subsistances en 2004.

Titulaire d’un Bachelor of Arts en psychologie, Steven Cohen crée pendant dix ans des œuvres plastiques à Johannesburg, qui font l’objet de nombreuses expositions internationales.

Dans son travail de performeur, Steven Cohen ne se produit pas uniquement sur scène et dans des galeries d’art mais aussi, sans invitation, dans des lieux publics. Artiste blanc, homosexuel et juif, il utilise son corps pour créer un « art vivant » qui renvoie à la sculpture, à la danse contemporaine, au travestissement et à la performance.

Avec son partenaire, le danseur-chorégraphe Elu, il produit une série de brèves pièces, Crawling, flying (1998), Kudu dance (2000), Chandelier (2002), qui vrillent les contradictions de l’Afrique du Sud post-apartheid. Dans leurs interventions, la paire fait du funambulisme sur les limites des rapports de races, comme des performances de genre.

En 2009, il installe son atelier à Lille. Il crée The Cradle of Humankind au festival Anticodes à Brest en 2011, qu’il présente l’année suivante au Festival d’Avignon. L’artiste y présente également Title Withheld. For Legal and Ethical Reasons (Sans titre. Pour raisons légales et éthiques) dans les dessous de scène de la Cour d’honneur du Palais des Papes.
Par son séjour en Europe, terre de l’holocauste, Steven Cohen est ramené à son identité juive. Lors d’une résidence aux Subsistances à Lyon, en avril 2004, où il découvre l’histoire de Klaus Barbie, la collaboration et la résistance, il crée le bouleversant solo Dancing inside out. Il a également participé au Collectif strip-tease avec Maid in South-Africa lors du Week_End Ça Chauffe ! en janvier 2005.
