Artistic education:
the artist at the heart of the introduction to art for younger spectators

Together with the teachers, Les Subsistances undertake to facilitate a relationship between young children and contemporary artists.
The artists, who are neither contributors nor teachers, create a meeting focused on the creation and the various languages it uses. This practical experimentation, linked to the learning process, is for us an original side to art education. For example, the partnership between the City of Lyon’s project “Enfance, art et langages” (Childhood, Art and Languages), the Victor Hugo nursery school (Lyon 1st arrondissement) and two artists has been one of the highlights of this project designed to introduce young spectators to art.

With her project “Là où va la main vont les yeux” (“Where the hand goes, the eyes go too”), Sophie Brenas, a choreographer from the company Onoma (in residence at Les Subsistances for their research on the topic of imagination) and Awena Cozannet, a sculptor, have occupied the nursery school for the whole school year. Thanks to this residence, practice workshops several times a week, parent and teacher workshops at Les Subsistances and the creation of an end-of-year show, Sophie Brenas, Awena Cozannet and the children have danced, produced things, drawn and played on various topics: imagination, movement and the perception of space and the body.

QUOTATION…
“With Sophie and Awena, we danced…
we hid under clouds…
we put on dresses made of clouds of fabric...
we had cloud wings…
clouds flew like birds…
the wind gave wings to the fairy…
we listened to the flowing water, we touched the water…
the Hagoromo River flies into the
sky because we put the wings on it…”
Bineta, Arthur, Ghislaine, and Mathis, pupils.
