Free First production / Performance - Circus - Dance
Plunge 6 artists in a tube of water to see what happens! Somewhere between dance, acrobatics and performance, Jörg Müller, an unusual circus artist*, has entrusted his ‘test tube’ to 6 performers from a dance or circus background. Each of them has to reinvent in a few cubic metres of fluid a dialog full of weightlessness and movement, dancing and breathing. 6 very different ‘body languages’ - Haim Adri, Jean Emmanuel Belot, Cendrine Gallezot, Keith Hennessy, Hyacinthe Reich, Sky de Sela - faced with the constraints of the element to evoke in 6 stages images of suspension, isolation, solitude, breathing… * How can we forget his surprising performance in a tube during the Ça Chauffe! WeekEnd in January 2005?
“Water allows me to juggle my own self, my own body, which weighs next to nothing, and even sometimes less than nothing. Gently rocked in this environment, the depths in contact with my skin, covering my ego, I can sometimes taste the air that others breathe in this foreign world.” Jörg Müller
France. Jörg Müller graduated from the Centre National des Arts du Cirque (Circus School) of Châlons-en-Champagne in 1994. Since 1993, he has been working with tubes and has created Les tubes with Mads Rosenbeck and the following year Mobile (les tubes), which focused on suspended sound tubes, and in 2001 C/O (Le Tube). He also worked with Cirque Plume for Toiles II (1995), the company Cahin-Caha for ChiencrU cirque bâtard (2000/2002) and on Arbeit Hinz et Kunz (2001) with Nikolaus Holz and Christian Lucas. His experience also saw him meet many choreographers such as Pierre Doussaint, Kitsou Dubois (1996/2001/2002), François Verret, and most of all Mark Tompkins, with whom he will be in residence for two years in Strasbourg from 1999. That is when he discovered “real time composition” and “contact improvisation” during various courses.
USA. Keith Hennessy lives in San Francisco. He is a multiskilled artist and the artistic director of company Circo Zéro. His first eponymous show is an intimate and spectacular circus performance, which incorporates circus and contemporary dance with a soundtrack based on American songs actualised in “electronica”. Hennessy is fond of popular art (street performances, folk, circus) and of performance in general and contemporary dance. He works with various companies including French company Cahin-Caha. He is a member of the collective Alternate Roots, a service organisation for artists, where he serves as an adviser, a director, a professor, a curator and an agitator. Since 1989, he has created 9 solo performances and several multi-genre choreographies and toured to perform them. He has performed three times at Les Subsistances, once for SDFUSA in April 2005 then for American Tweaker in June 2006, and finally for Sol Niger, his latest production, in January 2007.
France. Jean Emmanuel Belot is a performer and a choregrapher. After a cycle of architecture in Bordeaux, he is initiated with the techniques of mime with Philippe Bizot and opens with the performatives experiments. It develops its research task within video and musical projects. It is in Paris that he studies the techniques of physical action according to K. Stanislavsky with Vera Goreva (Theatre of art of Moscow) and begins the dance. It meets collective Res Publica for the creation of Sexes in 1996 and will continue this collaboration until 2002 with Corpus X, God is my copilot and EN3+4JEUX3. It is within this framework, in 2000, that he starts to work with Ennio Sammarco. In the center of its research he develops the process of improvisation. He works on creations in technological matter - with Fabrice Vincent, Wolf Ka, Lab(AU), Nicolas Tyco, XLR Project , Le Label Cedana- and takes part in workshops of research with Benoît Lachambre, Franz Poelstra,Carole Perdereau, Carlotta Ikeda and Joao Fiadeiro. In 2002, he creates Woo in order to gather different performers around projects from intervention. During a first residence with the Magasins Généraux of Lyon, 12+1=interdit au public, it begins collaborations with various artists of which the artist Alexandre Leveuf and the dancer Ennio Sammarco. With him he initiates the choreographic diptych Every adidas has a story (First issue, Trio pour un solo), and the performance-installation for 40 performers Les Journées impériales. France. Cendrine Gallezot is a dancer, a choreographer and a Feldenkrais* practitioner. She worked with Roxanne Huilmand, Philippe Découflé, Guy Botelo, Mark Tompkins, Isnel Dasilvera, la Cie Ilotopie, etc. A cross exercise mixing creation, teaching and the Feldenkrais method creates multiple partnerships with other visual artists, stage actors, circus artists, puppeteers and singers, who she directs on stage and for whom she creates a choreography (Cie Là OU, La mandarine blanche, La Méta -carpe, Libertivoire, c/o Jörg Müller...). In her own creations - watch me burn, Savez -vous plantez les choux, Enfant je..., Jamais deux sans toi - she explores the peculiarity of the body and mind’s patterns and the readability of the body in everyday space, on stage and in its environment. This approach feeds both her creative work and her teaching.
* The Feldenkrais method relies on movement. It is not a gymnastic, as the point is not to repeat a movement mechanically or to achieve it, or to imitate a model. The aim is to explore ways in which movement goes through all the parts of the body.
France. Hyacinthe Reich is a circus artist and a singer-songwriter. Following studies at the CNAC circus school (Centre National des Arts du Cirque) in Châlons-en-Champagne, he toured with all the greatest circuses: Cirque Plume, Cirque Archaos, Cirque O, etc. After a short detour in music and cinema, he switched to theatre in 2001 with Comme des couteaux, directed with Marielle Pinsard. This will be followed by Shakespeare Circus with Paul Koek, La Boîte de Parce – Que, Que- Plasti-Que en herbe... Lately, in 2007 he appeared in La Belle Voisine, a show by Marielle Pinsard.
USA. Sky de Sela is a circus artist and a clown. Aged 14, she became an apprentice in San Francisco’s Pickle Family Circus and developed her skills as a circus / trapeze artist. She trained at the C.N.A.C. circus school then at the Ecole Nationale de Cirque in Montreal for 3 years and used her time there to meet people who will prove decisive and to refine her passion and wishes in life: to create a flying trapeze for three people, found a circus, and have a family. In 1994, she co-founded Le Cirque Pocheros. For 8 years, she lived there, toured, and performed. At age 28, then a mother, she came down from the heights and devoted herself to make people laugh: to get close enough to touch them. To move people with artifice, she toured with company Cirque to perform L'Histoire d'Auguste. For three years, she toured throughout Europe, Latin America and Iceland. At age 37, she created her own show, Maintenant. Sky de Sela is accompagned on the bass player by Benoit Jayot (France).
Israel. Haïm Adri likes to arrange a mix of different artistic genres. Following his studies at the Beth-Tzvi Drama School in Tel Aviv, he arrived in France in 1992 and became passionate about mask theatre and body techniques in traditional Indian, Chinese and Japanese theatre. He firstly worked as a performer, and kept escaping traditional rules of dance and theatre, with Mercédes C. Aguirre, Anne-Marie Pascoli, and later at Ariane Mnouchkine’s Théâtre du Soleil. From 1996 onwards, he explored contact improvisation and real time choreographic composition, while working in parallel on the writing process. In 1998, he founded his own company, Sisyphe Heureux, with whom he created plays where sounds and images play an essential role: Palpitation (2000), L’Absent (2001) and the Bribes trilogy with Anamnèse Act 1 (2002), Anamnèse Act 2 (2003) and Back Up (2004).
