First production / Performance 3.4.5.6 april 08
Daniel Aschwanden and Peter Stamer, two Austrian visual artists and choreographers, will set camp in Lyon, in the district of La Guillotière. As “art craftsmen”, they will ask people of various linguistic origins to tell us about their life, to share words and stories. Thirty boxes will be given to locals and each of them will decorate the inside or his/her box, his/her universe, with photos, drawings, or legends. Each of them will then create with the help of the artists a story - their own or an invented story - which he/she will tell to people invited to enter the box… This experience was tried out last year in Beijing where they chose people from very different social backgrounds, and will be recreated in Lyon to illustrate a city populated by a number of inhabitants of many various geographic and linguistic origins.
"THE BOX
The box is used to create a meeting and link people who have never met before in the city. What is this box doing out in the street, and what happens in it? The “portable piece of architecture” creates a double show, both public and private.
Outside, passers-by gather. Inside, everyday life stops and gives way to an intimate moment: the host reveals his true self to his guest. A stroll & installation at La Guillotière and at Les Subsistances" Peter Stamer and Daniel Aschwanden
November & January 07 : 3 meetings with the locals of La Guillotière.
February 08: The “art craftsmen” will ring doorbells, organise meetings in not-for-profit organisations, schools, etc, and come to deliver their boxes. Each guest will make the inside of the box his/her own. He/She can imagine anything, speak in any language, sing, talk about himself or tell stories... He/She will be invited to attend workshops.
February & March 08: Meetings will take place at La Guillotière or at Les Subsistances (6-9 February, 3-8 March and 21-28 March). With the help of current art students, the artists offer the chance to meet again during workshops dedicated to creation inside the box and to building the story.
At La Guillotière, 29/30 March 08 from - 3pm to 5pm: The hosts and their boxes will be waiting for you in the streets and squares of the Guillotière district. They will ask passers-by if they want to enter their box and will tell them their stories.
At Les Subsistances, Ça Tchatche! WeekEnd 3.4.5.6 April 08:
> On 3 & 4 April 08, all 30 boxes and their owners will gather at Les Subsistances. The artists will then invite spectators to enter the boxes and listen to their story.
> On 5 & 6 April 08, the assembly of boxes will become an installation, a gigantic model of the private living conditions of Lyon’s inhabitants, in all its heterogeneousness and varied glory.
