Szóról szóra (“word for word”) brings to mind a series of crimes committed against the Roma in Hungary between 2008 and 2009 and explores the underlying causes of the Roma community’s situation in Hungarian society today. While the majority of Hungarians disapprove of such acts, they are evidence of pervasive discrimination. To create the text for this piece, Anna Lengyel used the verbatim theater method, which consists in transcribing, word for word, the testimony of real people. The actors determine the sentence length and order, but do not otherwise stylize or adapt the texts gathered during the various interviews.
Anna Lengyel and her team have gathered more than 60 hours of testimony from survivors, immediate family members, lawyers, police officers, mayors, heads of local governments or simple passers-by. They also rely heavily on statements by Hungarian public figures and have studied how the events have been treated by the media.
