A « Maibaum » is a pagan ritual that represents planting a tree in May to celebrate the return of spring and abundance. In a fascinatingly precise ballet, Jordi Galí and five dancers erect a Maypole and weave a giant, conch-like structure evocative of the life cycle and matrix through which the audience can walk. The artist-builders invite us to contemplate a community at work. During the three hours it takes to weave the conch, spectators are free to choose their own relationship to time, to come and go as they please. A magnificent builder of the ephemeral, the Catalan choreographer is continuing his work with bodies, raw materials, and space.
