Esmeray is a militant, transsexual creature of the Istanbulian night. Born a man in Anatolia in a small Kurdish village not far from Kars, Esmeray became a woman in Istanbul, where she now lives. After writing her autobiography, which traces her quest for “the woman within herself,” she turned it into a cabaret show full of humor, vitality, and sensitivity. Between a harangue and a confession, it is a reinvigorating lesson about life.
+Ben/O (Me/Him, film by Güldem Durmaz)
Through the character of the transsexual artist Esmeray, Güldem Durmaz examines the relationship between external appearance and self-image. Me/Him is a sort of self-surveillance experience in which Esmeray is filmed walking around at night in Istanbul—her territory—then filmed again taking the same routes dressed as the man she was twenty years ago. The split screen is used to explore the divided personality.
