Maud Le Pladec & Okwui Okpokwasili

From 27 to 31 January

Création  Dance / Music

A lover of contemporary music, Maud Le Pladec has been invited to the Aire de jeu festival for the third time, and she has asked Okwui Okpokwasili, the remarkable Nigerian-American performance artist, to choreograph along with her. Together they are writing Hunted: “an incantation or performance-like ritual where the issues of address, fiction and memory are raised. The music is neither a support for nor the subject-object of the research, but a partner with which Okwui converses” to transform the hunt into “dance: between hunger and satiety, fear and ruse, submission and resistance.”
The artists have selected Kalevi Aho’s Black Birds – a piece for accordion, an instrument that has long been associated with the devil – as Hunted’s central theme. Hunted draws on the subject of witchcraft, seen here as “the incarnation of a world of women that capitalism is trying to destroy: the heretic, the warrior, the disobedient woman, the woman who dares to live alone.”
