Halory Goerger & Antoine Defoort

From 18 till 21 September 2012

Unparalleled performers Antoine Defoort & Halory Goerger are raiders of extra-normal reality. Whatever the real world gives them, they appropriate, recycle and repurpose it to construct intelligent, ironic shows with infinitely thin or massively thick plots. Anything that’ll get a laugh makes a show. They put green plants to work in &&&&& & &&&, tennis balls in Cheval [Horse], and rotten apples in Métrage Variable [Variable Length]. Here, they see the stage as an empty but fertile space where everything needs to be done. In this space, they are bringing forth a system, a large fresco pieced together with whatever’s on hand: Germinal. A world to discover; not Zola’s.

Antoine Defoort is someone, not more of an artist than you or I, who tries to maintain a good atmosphere and a high level of porosity between his whims of the season, life, truth, and contemporary art. He therefore often finds himself battling with obvious contradictions for which he proudly takes responsibility or which he shamefully hides behind sudden transitions and wild digressions. He generally develops his shows (videos, films, sound, installations, texts, etc.) on his own, then arranges them during varied, anti-thematic, transdisciplinary performances in which the do-nothing lives with the well done and the tragic rubs shoulders with the incongruous.

Halory Goerger designs shows and installations instead of building houses, because it’s better for everyone that way. He works on the history of ideas because everything else was taken when he got here. He generally builds his performance systems in isolation. They’re like so many little Bouygues houses in which he wouldn’t want to live, unless they were burning. Dialogue takes the place of cement to hold a shape that’s being constructed live and is spent by the end of the show. In each of his operations, complete indigence flirts with formal rigor, in a relaxed relationship to artistic practices and with an eye toward getting out alive.
