“Time made you feel like you’d wasted your life: either spent your life with the wrong person or never found the right person to spend it with ¾ remember? ¾ or spent your whole life with the right person but never of course realised until that person sickened and died and you were alone …”
Dans la République du bonheur, by Marcial Di Fonzo Bo & Elise Vigier, promises to be a musical comedy about happiness, but one that is radically different from La Mélodie du bonheur: it’s a cruel, devastating comedy written in the early 21st century, when extreme individualism and dreams of conformity were replacing more idealistic visions.
The founders of the Théâtre des Lucioles, Marcial Di Fonzo Bo & Elise Vigier have worked together for a long time. Explorers of unusual forms of language, they put actors at the center of their work. They are fans of authors who shatter the expectations arising from the theatrical code. Martin Crimp, who hides his humor and cruelty behind a façade of classicism, is one them.
A family Christmas dinner is interrupted when Uncle Bob unexpectedly arrives. Who is he? Why did he come? Why is his wife still in the car? Bob and Madeleine are struggling against the view that the only path to happiness is personal fulfillment. After showing a world enslaved to the cult of self, Crimp suggests that even Dante’s dream of harmony and light is just one more illusion. According to Di Fonzo Bo, “Crimp is asking a fundamental question: isn’t uniformization leading us to a sort of ‘tyranny of happiness’? An ‘all alike’ resulting more and more clearly from globalization and capitalism’s failure? We ask questions about individual freedom within the family, the collective, and the republic with humor.”
