3rd edition: FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL
Choreographers and musicians come together around a major figure in contemporary music at Les Subsistances.
1 COMPOSER / Nico Muhly (UNITED STATES)
“When people ask me what my music sounds like, I usually avoid the question by talking about music I like. . . . I’ve gotten around it by saying: ‘Well, my favorite music is English Renaissance music, early choral works, and a certain kind of American minimalism from the 1960s and 1970s. It’s both amplified and sacred, fast and slow. You ought to come to a concert. . .’”
Nico Muhly is a contemporary music phenomenon. He’s only in his early thirties but is already considered one of the leaders of the contemporary music revival. He has composed numerous works of symphonic and chamber music, and two of his operas, Two Boys and Dark Sisters, were created one after the other, in 2011 in Philadelphia and at the English National Opera, and reprised in 2013 at Covent Garden (London) and the New York Metropolitan Opera. Muhly has composed for the choreographer Benjamin Millepied at the New York City Ballet, for Antony and the Johnsons, and also for film (The Reader). A student and protégé of Philip Glass, he became known for his collaborations with popular music before becoming a happy free agent of post-modern music.
Laurent Chetouane (France) A young French choreographer, Laurent Chetouane began by directing German and English texts in major theaters in Hamburg, Munich and Cologne before turning to choreography. His dance reflects this background, seeking a density that expresses itself through movement.
Yuval Pick (France / Israel) Director of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Rillieux-la-Pape, Yuval Pick participated in the first edition of Aire de Jeu with David Lang in 2012. He began his career as a dancer with the Batsheva Dance Company, then went international with artists such as Tero Saarinen, Carolyn Carlson, Russel Maliphant and the Lyon Opera Ballet. Pick has been a choreographer for ten years. His originality lies in his heightened sense of choreographic technique and a taste for the intense energy of movement.
Yasmeen Godder (Israel) ”I like the idea of working from a place where everything is possible, where the body stops at nothing,” says Yasmeen Godder, an Israeli choreographer trained in New York. Her dance pushes bodies to the limit in a choreographic art full of humor that is sometimes close to performance art. She created a piece at Les Subsistances for the Week_End Ça Valse ! in 2008.
Kyle Abraham (United States) This young dancer and choreographer from New York is known for his work based on an intuitive, highly personal quality of movement that blends hip-hop, modern dance, and Cunningham techniques. In 2011, OUT magazine called him the “best and brightest creative talent to emerge in New York City in the age of Obama.” A partner of New York live art, this is his first French creation.
