“Fifteen friends wrote me 15 short scores about an extinct animal of their choice that represents them or with which they feel an affinity.
The extinct animal symbolizes “the Other,” subsumed by the majority, the norm. Too big to reproduce itself, too slow, too able to see. Emblematic of the strange, the weird, the perverse and the maladjusted. The thing that throws us into melancholy, dreams and fantasy, yet at the same time informs us, like a metaphor, about our relationship to our environment. It is a voice from the world of the dead distilling a dark vision full of humor.”
Antonia Baehr, a Queer performance artist, works on identity, its transmission, and its construction. In this piece, she turns a few pages of her living bestiary for us, speaking to us of humans as well as animals that become extinct because they can’t adjust.
