How to archive live art performances? How to capture the fleeting moment of a live piece of artwork? How to outwit the power of archive images? How to prevent the fetishization of archives? These contradictions have led us, almost naturally, to challenge live art spectators and to preserve the spirit of live art in the very process of archiving.
4 years and 7 locations in Europe were archived into boxes, containing some carefully selected images of the various A Space For Live Art festivals.
Being in presence of a living archive, it’s putting it in danger just by consulting it. Halfway between the artist who has delivered his secret without any possible reiteration, and the historian constantly opening boxes from the past, the audience is free to choose its own attitude.
What to do? Open these boxes, taking the risk of destroying the images when placing them under the daylight? You are eager to remember one performance or another, one moment you have lived or another. But your gesture is an irreversible act: looking at an image, it’s like making it disappear in one movement.
The choice is yours! You are solely responsible for your actions and only actor of your memory.
