Contemporary Circus:
A mix of practice, theory and artistic quality

Ever since 2005, Les Subsistances and the Ecole de cirque de Lyon have been building a solid partnership, with a common desire: to bring to the region ambitious ideas and practice in the field of contemporary circus. As far as practice is concerned, this approach focuses on the individual, with workshops and introduction courses on circus skills for adults and children, and on schools and special needs schools, with the development of projects with high school students and disabled people.
These workshops draw their strength and relevance from a theoretical exploration of contemporary circus, in partnership with local circus artists. Les Subsistances participate to this networking, by organising for example a Circus Day (Journée professionnelle sur les arts du cirque) in May 2007 (For more info, see the day's summary - In french).Les Subsistances also support the foundation course students of the Ecole du Cirque (Circus School) during their training: weekly loan of a workshop and introduction to the circus artist in residence, or involvement in the projects Jeunes Talents Cirque (Circus Budding Talent) and Sida Basta. The aim is to promote the exchange of open ideas on an art form in rapid evolution.
By sharing ideas, skills, teachers and work spaces, Les Subsistances and the circus school aim to promote contemporary circus in all its guises.

QUOTATION…
“Our students have access to a training room, to rehearsals of companies in residence, and to the library. For them this represents a real “resource centre” where they can exchange ideas with artistes, see other people’s work and show their own, and discover new art forms thanks to a spectator’s trail.” Eve Domenach, coordinator for the École de cirque de Lyon.
