First production / Circus
19 & 20 june 08 at 10.15pmFROM THE BOOK LES MÉTÉORES BY MICHEL TOURNIER + CHOREOGRAPHY BY ALEXANDRE FRAY & FRÉDÉRIC ARSENAULT Fraternity and solitude, fights, hope and an almost twin-like co-dependency… Base Alexandre Fray and flyer Frédéric Arsenault have written their show in response to Michel Tournier’s novel Les météores. Appris par corps, a play on word between “appris par cœur” (learnt by heart) and the word “corps” (body), is the first production of these two young circus artists. The strength of their relation and its complexity are tested through the body. This dense but light, skilful and poetic, enigmatic and deeply human show creates a type of circus that goes way beyond physical prowess, towards a shared sense of humanity. See synopsis (pdf / 50 KB) ! In french! Excerpt“Listen to this marvellous tale .... Every pregnant woman carries two children in her. But the strongest of the two cannot tolerate the presence of a brother with whom he has to share everything. He strangles him in the mother’s womb, and then eats him, and later he comes into the world alone, tarnished by his original sin, condemned to solitude and betrayed by his monstrous size. Humanity is made of ogres, of strong men with the hands of stranglers and the teeth of cannibals. These ogres, having by their original fratricide lead to the torrent of crime and violence named History, roam the world, crazy with remorse and solitude. Only we, do you hear me, only we are innocent. We are the only ones to have been born hand in hand, a fraternal smile on our lips.” Michel Tournier’s Les météores BiographyThe company Un Loup Pour L’Homme was founded in 2005 by two acrobats, base Alexandre Fray and flyer Frédéric Arsenault. It was born out of their desire to follow their own direction, in parallel with performing other people’s work. Both follow the same pattern: a sporty childhood, completed studies, entry at the Circus School in their respective countries (Quebec for Arsenault, France for Fray), acrobalance training... on each side of the Atlantic, their lives follow the same parallel. Following their parting of ways with their previous circus partners, they met in 2004, when working for the Hendrick Van Der Zee company (Guy Alloucherie). They quickly realised they shared a passion for acrobalance and in 2005 founded their own company in order to fulfil an ever-increasing need for personal research focused on acrobalance and to start working towards their first production, Appris Par Corps. Having read various books on the body, sport, and movement, they take the physical plunge into an original exploration of their medium. In 2006, they present the foundations of their production and win the prize “Jeunes Talents Cirque” (Circus Budding Talent). Their work revolves around an open-minded vision of acrobalance. The spectacular aspect of this type of performance fades in comparison with the research of new forms highlighting various aspects of our relationships to others. Through the peculiarities of this strange and unusual pair, a flyer and a base, eminently physical explorations find a meaning, a beauty, a poetry, always full of humanity. Cast and crew & thanks
