Joris Mathieu and the Compagnie Haut & Court like to create a theatre of surreal images that draw brilliantly from sci-fi clichés.
Joris Mathieu - texts smuggler, universe creator - has recently worked on the works of Antoine Volodine (Le Bardo; Des anges mineurs) before starting on a cycle on Philippe K. Dick. When he distances himself from reality, through inventive visual and sound devices, it is first and foremost to try and look at today’s world, which he believes lacks communication and embodiment.

J. Mathieu / Cie Haut & Court

Residence dates: From 6 to 22 june 2011

Joris Mathieu grew up among his father’s paintings and his mother’s love of books, and started going to the theatre at a very young age. He founded the company Haut & Court in 1998 with three fellow actors. Mathieu chooses works, adapts and stages them with the help of his company. In residence in Corbas and later Vénissieux, he explored the possibilities of various digital and theatrical tricks. He developed a theatre that is both narrative and visual. Fascinated by the structure of the narrative, he creates art forms rooted in romantic and dreamlike material. He is clearly a theatre auteur. His commitment to a poetic sci-fi theatre joins up with a political tradition that aims to question the world and the place of the individual within it, through a premonitory and sensitive vision. Convinced that art has its place in the heart of the city, he also creates urban installations and onsite performances, showcased during residencies in inner-city tower blocks or public spaces.
His company, Haut et Court, has been established in the Rhône-Alpes region since 1997. From the start, it worked from the standpoint of an ‘extra-ordinary’ theatre by inviting fiction into our everyday lives. The company champions narrative forms based on a strong visual and sensory environment. Its ideas on the use of videos mean that they are viewed as a narrative tool, free from their mere functional, technological use. Novels and short stories are at the source of its theatrical offerings, in the form of stage adaptations.
Haut & Court is becoming more and more present, through its status as the official company of the Scène nationale du Creusot, its partnership with Comédie de Caen, its many coproductions (Comédie de Saint-Etienne, Comédie de Caen, Scène Nationale de Cherbourg, Scène Nationale d'Alençon, T.U de Nantes...), large-scale touring (Paris, France, abroad) and presence in the field of digital arts.
