Eszter Salamon
« AND THEN »

Eszter Salamon is a Hungarian choreographer living in Berlin, who examines the origins of her dance and her choreographic experience. “Magyar Tàncok”*, her latest creation, examined the question of identity versus nationality and the genre through her family heritage of traditional folk dancing and her experience in ballet  and contemporary dance. “AND THEN” now explores one of the foundations of our identity: the name.
Imagine you find a photo album in the street. You open it, see people you don’t know, holiday snaps, familiar attitudes and gestures, strange faces who smile at you as if you were the friend or family for whom these pictures were intended... Is it not strange and almost unsettling to enter in that way into someone else’s life?
This is the basis for Eszter Salamon’s show, which mixes images, movements, and voices, somewhere between choreography and movies (documentaries & fiction).

Eszter Salamon had practiced traditional Hungarian dancing from age 5 to age 20 when she discarded it entirely for 15 years. She performed with great success for leading figures of contemporary dance such as Mathilde Monnier and François Verret, and as a choreographer herself created the solo piece What a body you have, honey. Later, with Xavier Le Roy, she created Giszelle. In 2004, Eszter Salamon, in residence at Podewil-Berlin, created Reproduction. She was also awarded a grant by Villa Médicis Hors les Murs.

 

“On a stage that contracts and expands, folds up and unfolds in two or three different spaces, somewhere between here and nowhere, eight people tell and sing the story of their life and of the time they live in. Nothing links these people. What brought them together? What does it mean to meet someone whose existence does not concern you at all? Why is it that the expression of each of these other people leaves us indifferent and at the same time seems hugely important to us?” Eszter Salamon & Bojana Cvejic_
